Rethymno - Archaeological Sites

Rethymno prefecture’s archaeological sites are an integral piece of its land and inseparable from the historical memory of its inhabitants.

Archaeological sites that highlight the long history of the place, its importance and prosperity until its decadence are scattered in the mountain range of Psiloritis, such as Zominthos, Ancient Eleftherna and Ancient Axos, or inside the city of Rethymno, such as the Fortezza Fortress, even in the villages surrounding it, such as Ancient Lappa and Late-Minoan Necropolis of Armeni.

The archaeological sites reveal us the rich Minoan history of the area, the history that made this area known all over the world, the commercial relations of the inhabitants of that time and ceremonial rituals and traditions. The archaeological sites’ excavations have revealed important findings with pieces of frescoes, delicately painted vases made of precious materials, jewellery and even entire buildings, archaeological remains dating from the Stone Age to the Roman and early Christian times. Indeed, the range of archaeological sites is so enormous and unexplored that the excavations continue up to this day, being an inexhaustible source of information about the lifestyle, social organization and function of the Minoan civilization, but also geometric, Roman and Hellenistic periods.
