Panormo is a small holiday resort about 20 km east of Rethimnon on the north coast of Crete. In contrast to the neighbouring towns to the west like Platanias, Panormo still has an exuberant, hectic-free, Cretan atmosphere. The place is especially suitable for holidaymakers who are looking for a quiet, relaxing and relatively inexpensive place with small beaches and good bus connections.

Not much is going on in Panormo after midnight. The center of Panormo consists of narrow, car-poor streets. There are still the old Greek kafenions and shops here. The post office is in the old area next to the Georgos and Georgia tavern. There is also a bank and ATMs nearby. Accommodation In Panormo you can find a room at any time of the year. The prices are particularly low in the back of the town: from 25 € you can get a double room in one of the many houses that rent simple "rooms". Only in the main season does it sometimes get a bit tight. In our opinion, the following accommodations are recommended. Before doing this, you can try white beans, snails or one of the 10 salads, for example. If you go 100 meters further west after Fanari, you come to the Kastro tavern. As is often the case in Greece, the taverns that are not in the tourist center of a place are a good choice.

At Kastro you can get high quality Cretan food at low prices. On top of that, the service is great. The distance from the port is a good 10 minutes on foot. A worthwhile walk. Sitting in the old streets in the heart of the village is particularly nice. A tavern that dates back to the good old days in Crete is Georgos and Georgia. Some locals and regulars also call this restaurant Steki. The small menu is completely sufficient. Everything is freshly prepared. In what is probably the oldest tavern in Panormo, there are daily specials in addition to the menu. These are almost always a treat for the palate. Among the standard dishes, the small fish, mousaka or calamari are recommended. All 3 dishes cost between 7 and 7.50 euros.

Of the starters, you should try the grilled peppers, fennel pockets or dakos (two-baked dishes with tomatoes and feta cheese). The Geronimos and Makis restaurants are also in the narrow streets in the center of Panormo. Both are favorites of many Panormo tavern experts. You can eat in the Barbas-Andreas tavern directly above the harbor. In the plant-rich terrace restaurant you have a wonderful view of the small harbor and the beach. The Porto Parasiris is popular at the port. Whether pasta with mussels, deep-fried calamari or stuffed cabbage leaves as a starter - we liked it at Porto Parasiris in 2015.

To eat you can enjoy the view of the blue Mediterranean Sea. Just a few meters from Porto Parasiris is the Vinzi. It's one of the best cafes in Panormo. Beaches Perhaps Panormo has been spared from mass tourism because there are many cliffs and beaches that are not long in the region.
