Georgioupolis is a small seaside town in west Crete.
Georgioupolis is set in a green countryside with a large beach
The River Almyros meets the sea at Georgioupolis. Just before the town, it forms a little lake that is home to many birds and animals.
On entering the town you see many eucalyptus trees, both along the road and in the main square, and a row of cypress trees forming a pretty picture.
The main square of Georgioupolis is one of the most attractive to be found in a Cretan tourist village.
Georgioupolis is a village of many shops.
Take the time to stroll around its narrow streets and you will see many tourist shops and little tavernas. You definitely won’t lack for anything!
The most popular sight in the harbour, however, is the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, set on a manmade rock jetty. It’s worth walking along to take wonderful pictures. Whether the sea is calm or rough with foaming waves, the scenery is amazing.
Is the only freshwater lake in Crete.
The lake is in a beautiful landscape, lying in a valley among the hills. Kournas Lake is the ideal place for an afternoon walk or a day trip. Many people like to have an afternoon picnic there.
The landscape is lovely and relaxing, whether you want to go for a walk in the countryside, swim or ride a pedalo on the lake.
Swim or ride a pedalo on the waters of the lake. There are little beaches on the banks of Lake Kournas just under the main road and in front of the tavernas.
There you will find sun loungers and umbrellas in the summer months, while you can also rent pedalos (7 euros/hour) if you want to enjoy a ride on the lake - this is a particularly fun and romantic option in the afternoon.
Buy souvenirs from the pottery workshops, which sell their own handicrafts along with other tourist items.
The waterfalls of Argyroupoli are a verdant scenery with springs, watermills and tap water running in streams! It is located after the village Episkopi (leaving Georgioupolis).
As for the food, in most taverns, you will find live trout and sturgeon! Alternatively, we would recommend a dish of "Antitikostos" (baked on the side of the fire), a speciality of mountain Crete. "Antikristo" is the meat of a Cretan lamb roasted in a special traditional way, which gives a unique flavour!
