Stalis, Stalida

Stalis is located 34 km east of Heraklion, 3 km after Hersonissos and 3 km before Malia.

The strong development of tourism in the region resulted in these three towns (Hersonissos, Stalis and Malia) that almost unite a coastal area of about 10 kilometers, full of hotels and apartments. Especially if you follow the coastal road from Stalis to Malia, it is impossible to distinguish where Stalis ends and Malia begins. In the 1980s tourism in Crete had rapid development. This was the time when Stalis developed and turned into a popular holiday resort in eastern Crete. Until then it was just the beach where the inhabitants of Mohos, the village located on the mountain rising south of Stalis, spent their summer holidays. So, Stalis did not exist as an independent village until it appeared spontaneously in the urban plan that lacks organised settlement characteristics. There is no central square, but only a promenade with shops, restaurants and hotels in the two sides. Stalis is different from neighbouring Hersonissos and Malia in that there is no such intense nightlife that characterises these areas. Stalis is more suitable for family holidays, but if someone wants to have fun until the morning, Hersonissos and Malia are very close. This does not mean that Stalis has no bars and cafes. Along the beach there are many cafes and beach bars, so you will not miss the fun, but you will be at a quieter place than in the neighbouring areas. This can be an advantage for many, rather than a disadvantage.
