Plaka
Plaka is one of the most famous and traditional villages of western Crete in the region of Apokoronas. Located 23 km from Chania, the village is wooded and largely preserves the beautiful natural surroundings, as it is located on the slope of the mountain Drapanokefala, where the vegetation is intense and varied.
You can see olives trees, even plane trees, undergrowth of shrubs, as well as facilities of organically grown plants that have not altered the character of the area. Plaka has about 400 permanent residents, of whom half are foreigners, mainly British. The village retains heavily its traditional character, although the locals will tell you that with the recent construction, it has lost its distinctive character. Plaka has a beautiful main square where the interest of all visitors is concentrated since this is the point where locals and foreigners meet each other in cafes or coffee shops of the square.
The inhabitants of Plaka dealing with their farms and the production of olive oil and wine or raki in the region is widespread. You will find local shops and taverns with very good local wine, not only to drink during your stay there but to take with you as well.
