Kastellos is a village of villages called "Kournopatimata", which are famous for the love of their people for the arms, their unconquerable spirit and the special pride and militancy in each period of occupation of Crete. The terrain where Kastelli hill is located is such that creates a natural impregnable fortress because of the cliffs formed by the steep ground.

That's why the Venetians named it Kastellos (ie Kastelli, Castella Castle - Fortress) and chose it as the capital of the wider region around Chania - Rethymno. It has stone houses and many old ruins of houses.
